SHULAN ISMAIL SHIRALIYEV

(1935-2013)

Orientalist

Shulan Shiraliyev was born on 10 February 1935. In 1962, he graduated with honors from Azerbaijan State University, Faculty of Oriental Studies, Department of Persian Language. In 1966, he completed his postgraduate studies at the Department of Languages of Near and Middle East Nations, and defended a PhD thesis. During his pedagogic activity his appointments included a teacher, senior lecturer and associate professor. From 1969-1971, he was employed as a translator in Iran. From 1977-1981, Shulan Shiraliyev was dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies. In 1998, he was appointed to a professorship. He authored nearly 50 theses and articles on different problems of Persian linguistics, programs on various disciplines. He also published seven monographs, textbooks and education handbooks. He addressed a number of international conferences in Baku, Moscow and Tehran.

Shulan Shiraliyev received certificates of recognition from the Ministry of Education and BSU for his fruitful scientific and pedagogic activity. In 2009, he was decorated with “Leading education worker of the Republic of Azerbaijan” badge.
