ASLAN GUDDASAR EYVAZOV

(1926-2005)

Orientalist

Aslan Eyvazov was born in 1926. After completing his secondary education, he studied at a two-year party school under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan from 1947-1949. From 1942-1944, he participated in the Great Patriotic War. His military decorations included the Order of Great Patriotic War 1st degree, and “For Bravery”, “For Defence of the Caucasus”, “Victory over Germany”, and “For Distinguished labor at home” medals. He studied Turkic philology at Leningrad State University named after Zhdanov, Faculty of Oriental Studies, from 1951-1956. In 1964, he defended a PhD thesis. In 1969, Aslan Eyvazov was elected an associate professor, and achieved professorship in 1988. In 1966, he began a research and teaching activity at the Department of Turkish Language (later renamed Department of Turkish Philology), Azerbaijan State University, where his appointments included a senior teacher, associate professor and professor.

His research interests laid in Turkology. He published 17 papers, seven books and handbooks, and three programs in Turkish, Azerbaijani and Russian languages.
